The Masthead is
being covered by T.I. because he is the artist who is selling the magazine. We
still know that the magazine is Vibe because it is so well known.
Main Cover lines
include some of HipHop and RnB’s biggest names which immediately which catch
the audience’s eyes, because they want to read about the biggest name in their
preferred genre.
There is a consistent colour
theme on the magazine cover. The main colours used are red and white. The red
is used to catch the audience’s eyes. It is the main colour that stands out.
T.I. also ties in with the colour theme because he is wearing black/navy
clothing which as well makes him stand out from the red and white. The colours he is wearing could connote
ambiguity and misunderstanding which HipHop and RnB usually is.

It is a close up picture of rapper T.I. The
picture is a direct mode of address because he is looking straight at the
audience immediately creating a connection with the audience. His expression could connote danger or
determination because he wants to be the best and at the top at what he does.
Next to his image there is a quote ‘people have been comparing me to Tupac’.
Tupac was considered and one of the best rappers of all time and by people
comparing him Tupac it means that his determination
is paying off.
Audience:
The audience for Vibe magazine is usually people who listen
to HipHop and RnB between the ages of 16-34.
Case Studies
The Masthead of
Vibe magazine covers are usually written in big bold letters but this cover is
somewhat different because though it is written in bold letters the bottom is
fading out and it is being covered by Ciara. Vibe magazine are so well known
that they can cover half their masthead and people will still know what
magazine it is. The fading out of the masthead works well with the house style
of the magazine because it is very plain and simple and it adds to the
minimalistic feature of the magazine.
The audience are immediately drawn in because of the
lighting used. This contrasts with the main cover line as it quotes ‘Stand Up
Ciara’ this shows that in the article she could reveal more than she can on the
cover.
Image:
The main image is a medium of HipHop artist Ciara. This is a
very simple shot of Ciara because she is nude in the picture it works with the
house style of the magazine. She is posing in a very seductive manner which
appeals to many male audiences. Her
facial expression is a direct mode of address which could appeal to both the
male and female target audiences because her expression is sultry but also very
playful.
Colours used:
he main colours used on the cover are red and black. Red
could connote love, passion and sex which relates well with Ciara’s pose.

Research
Skills:
During this
journalism task I have found out that I have much strength in my researching
skills. I found it relatively easy to find out the appropriate information I
needed to complete the task. I read a number of articles to figure out what
type of magazine I was going to write for. I didn’t have much weakness in researching but
one way I could improve is reading hard copy magazines instead of the online
copies to help me.
Journalistic
and Writing Skills:
After I
acquired all of the information I needed to start writing my article, this is
where I found it difficult as I didn’t know what type of magazine or newspaper
I was writing for. I finally decided to write for Vibe magazine as I thought it
was the best magazine that will suit what the article is about. I read a few
articles on the Vibe magazine website to help me found out what style of
writing I should write in. After reading some articles I thought it would be
best to write in an informal but informative manner. Once I started actually
writing the article, I found it somewhat easy because of the style of writing I
was doing. I was able to write my article very quickly because of this. One
improvement I can make to my writing skills is to stick to the word limit
because I went over by a hundred words.
InDesign
Skills I Have Learnt:
Once I
finished my article I had to put it through InDesign to create a professional
looking article. This was when I needed help because I found InDesign difficult
to use. This was definitely one of the biggest weaknesses I had during this
assignment and I think I have to make more articles through InDesign if I want
to improve. I thought I could have made my article look a lot better, I wasn’t
happy with the overall product.
Web
Publishing Skills:
When the
article was finished I had to post it on my blog which I had to create new in
order to do so. This is the first ever
time I have created a blog and have ever blogged anything. I found the blog
confusing to use but I eventually understood how to blog my article. I think I
have to start blogging a few more things in order to understand how to use it
fully.
Audience
Feedback:
I asked my
teacher what she thought of the article and she said that the colours I used were
perfect and it stood out very well. I asked some of my peers the same questions
and they thought it looked very good.
The only thing I had to improve on was my font and after I done that
they said it looked better.
